I train and coach many business professionals that are on the go (as well as myself) and I don’t have the luxury of an office or set location to have an organized desk. My desk is mobile and it changes every week as I travel. My office is where I am working for that week and people I will be training or coaching face to face and I conduct business on the go.
You are an on the go business professional if you have a home office, but your work is in the field. I have customer calls in the car while I am on blue tooth. I do virtual coaching and traing via webinar and conference calls. I contact team member and customers as I await my flight, then later at night, I am in my hotel room, collecting my thought for the day, ideas, items to follow up on and preparing or the next productive day.
If you are on the go, you don’t have the luxury of having a notepad ready and handy to take notes and even if you jotted it down, you run the risk of losing that note. You are also limited to the mode of note(s) you take as well and the most important part is to retain it, and take action.
The tool I use is my smart phone (Android) as it is with me all the time. I also carry an iPad as well as a laptop. Yes, I am a tech junkie 🙂 But really, the tool I use to capture my notes on the go is Evernote. As I am driving and in California it is illegal to use the phone while driving (unsafe anywhere I think), but if I have an important thought or note that I need to quickly capture, it is worth pulling over to go into my Evernote app and either record an audio note, or a typed note. A picture is worth a thousand words, so why not capture something that you want to remember and take action on.
Many busy on the go professionals such as real estate agents, consultants, sales professionals, etc. travel and have a difficult time trying to capture notes and thoughts or more importantly commitments and follow up with customers. I have a system down to not only record my notes, but a system to manage the notes I take, and then take action on them. I am providing this system in my book, “Evernote for Salespeople” but it could be for any business person wanting to use this powerful software to increase productivity and increase sales.
One of the key benefits of Evernote, is that once I capture it on my smart phone, it then syncs to my iPad, and any other device I use to work (home computer, laptop, etc.) I can also access it via the web. If you have not tried Evernote or have note used it in a way that will increase your productivity, please do contact me, or get my book Evernote for Salespeople to help you set up your Evernote environment, workflow and develop a system to help improve your productivity as well as increase sales.
The picture I have for this article is a snapshot of an android screenshot with the Evernote app open with the different icons you can use to capture your notes, thoughts, ideas, and commitments on the go effectively.
