Driving Home After Work: What do you think about?

bubble

You finished a long day at work and begin your commute towards home and in between thoughts go through your mind about the day.  What do you think about?  Do you think about what you didn't accomplish for that day or do you think about the things that accomplished?

Every professional has tasks and duties that must be performed on a daily work day basis and believe it or not, things actually get done through the course of a day.  Even if you are working towards a project to completion, things are progressing towards being done.  If you find yourself constantly thinking about what you didn't accomplish for the day, you missed out on the celebration of what you have accomplished.

The negative thoughts that could cause stress, anxiety and worry is not a good way to end your day and it could carry forward to the next and create an ongoing cycle of dissatisfaction and burnout.  How about innovating the way you think at the end of your day, during your commute home?

If you have set specific daily goals for yourself and plan out your day with efficiency, then whatever you have done for the day has already passed and all the worry in the world will not change anything other than create more stress for yourself.  If you constantly run over things that you have to do during your drive home, then maybe it is time for you to change the way to set reminders or tasks for yourself and come up with a system that will give you a checklist of things to accomplish. What I do is use my smart phone to add tasks as soon as it comes up.  This way, I know that I have my commitments in order and a quick look at my to-do list will give me the necessary information I need to know what I need to accomplish.  This will save you a lot of headaches and not run the risk of not fulfilling commitments you give to people.  If you do not have a working calendar that schedules your appointments, and you try to get by just by memory alone, then you run the risk of missing important meetings and deadlines.

Schedule important things that you need to do as well as the unimportant things that needs to get done.  Find new ways to be productive and not wasting time thinking about what needs to be done over and over again.

Celebrate each day.  Give yourself some recognition for what went well, enjoy the feeling of accomplishing good work and rethink of the things that went well throughout the day.  Success breeds more success and by giving it the respect it deserves you can improve upon the past successes you have already done.  Dwelling on the negative parts of the day, will do nothing but give you wrinkles and a bad attitude.  Try thinking positive and remember the good work you put in, try it with a smile and drive home feeling accomplished versus worried or stressed.  You will begin to feel energized for the next day and begin recognizing that you do produce good work.  Celebrate it.

Personal Branding: Deliver Quality Work for Career Success

Meeting room stencil graffitiAt work when you are given an assignment or when you have something that you need to turn in, what does your end product look like?  To develop your personal brand, your work is a reflection of how others will view you.

Lets say your boss had asked you to provide more information regarding a project proposal you had composed.  Your boss simply asked for a simple outline, nothing fancy.  Do you, A.  give a simple outline or B. over deliver and hand in something that you could be proud of?

If you are developing your personal brand for career progression, it is important to consistently do well at what you are given to do.  If given a task, do your best and only let your best work or closest to your best be the output.  Don’t settle for less and put in the minimum effort like most people would.  What this does is that it shows that you have the capacity for much more and the way your boss(es) view you and your work will be with full confidence that you will deliver with quality work.

A great example of this is about a guy I have worked with in the past who has always wanted to be promoted and recognized for his work.  Whenever he did anything, he just gave it a half effort approach and the end result was just ok to get by.  Now ask yourself, if you were this person’s boss, would you think this person is capable of doing more?  Now take the next person who delivers quality work no matter how small or big the assignment or task is.  This is the type of person who has demonstrated with proof about being able to handle more responsibility.

A lot of people I have observed who say that they have less than meaningful jobs,  usually this is their first job that requires redundant and low responsibility tasks, complain about how he/she should be doing much more important things.  So lets say for example, that their job is to wipe the counters and ensure that the copy machine is filled with paper each night.  Not a glamorous task by any means but with each individual, their task is crucial for the performance and productivity of the team and organization as a whole.  Now, this person who complains and gives only partial effort is inconsistent with fulfilling their tasks, do you think this is a person who would be promoted or given more responsibility?  Heck no!  Show that you can do even the smallest of tasks well and people will take notice, you will progress and the tasks will get harder and possibly more glamorous, but by keeping the strong work value of delivering quality work will add upon your abilities and career progression with each step.  When you interview or go for a higher position, you will have an arsenal of examples to give on how well you do things and your referrals will most likely be positive.  Deliver quality work and in the long run it will help your personal brand be associated with quality.

What is Personal Innovation?

personal innovation

Personal Innovation picks up where personal development left off.  Personal innovation is about rethinking the ways you do things on a daily basis and to improve with each passing day.  Maybe you have applied some personal development into your life, but as the times changes, what got you successful before might not work for the future.  We live in different times and by making a commitment to personal innovation to recreate yourself and make yourself a better person than you were yesterday, a month ago, or a year ago, you will continue to achieve more success and take personal development to the next level.  These are the basic principles behind personal innovation. First, lets define innovation:

Wikipedia.org defines innovation as,

Innovation is a change in the thought process for doing something or "new stuff that is made useful.

Bing.com defines innovation as,

  • origination: the act or process of inventing or introducing something new
  • new idea or method: a new invention or way of doing something
  • Google.com defines innovation as,

An innovation is a new thing or a new method of doing something.

An innovation is a new thing or a new method of doing something. Noun (countable) Innovation is the introduction of new ideas, methods, or things. Noun (uncountable)

Some of the Synonyms: novelty, invention, revolution, origination, modernization, improvement, advance.

As you can see the word innovation itself is about doing something new, its about fresh ideas, improvement and advancement.  Personal development is a beneficial approach for many to apply to their lives to improve, but look for innovative ways to re-energize your development by looking at innovative ways to improve upon what you already have set in place and innovate your personal development.

Personal Innovation is about innovating yourself and making yourself better at whatever it is you do.  If you have customers, and they are currently happy, take it to the next level and just wow them with more, if you think you have reached a comfortable level of success, push yourself to grow even further.  Just like technology and products, without innovation you may risk being left behind as others realize the importance of innovation and does something about it.  Look at things with a fresh set of eyes and be aware of the changes in your industry, profession and trends and innovate to prepare yourself for the next level of development on a personal level.

Innovative Approach to Reboot Yourself: Press Cntrl-Alt-Delete

    controlaltdelete

Like our computers we have many things going on in our lives that can overwhelm us and cause us to crash or freeze things up to where we are in a rut or feel unmotivated.  Like our computers, there are certain buttons you can push to get you out of that situation and by pushing the right buttons you can move towards innovating yourself and changing your unmotivated state.  You must be wondering why I have the control-alt-delete keys as an example for this post.  Well, just like a computer, we can get stuck and overloaded with processes that tend to freeze us up.  Sometimes no matter how long we wait for something to happen, things just seem to go too slow.  In life, you also have the option for Control - Alt and Delete for a better outcome.  Take a look at what I mean below:

    • CTRL:  CONTROL-  In life, things come our way that we cannot control, but the one thing we can control is our attitude.  We can choose to learn from our setbacks and not let it overcome us and take it as lessons learned or as they say, "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger".  If you are feeling unmotivated, control the situation by adjusting your attitude towards why you feel unmotivated.  Look for innovative ways to recreate yourself or what you are doing.  When we operate like a robot on cruise control, things can get quite boring, but we have the power to push our own "control" button on how we break out of our comfort zone and open ourselves to different challenges and actions that will give us the sense of motivation back in our lives.  You have full control of what you do on a daily basis, you can choose to do just what is necessary, or you can look for new opportunities, volunteer for different projects, mentor someone, improve upon what you are currently doing... you have the control, just push that button.
    • ALT: Alternative-  Ok, the ALT key is actually alternate, but in this case lets just say it stands for alternatives.  If you are unmotivated, look for alternatives to get you re-energized and motivated.  If you continue doing what you are doing, and yet it makes you unmotivated, you will stay that way.  You will feel stuck because you didn't look for the different routes to take instead you continue doing what makes you feel unmotivated.  Adjust your attitude, with positve thoughts as an alternative or be bold and seek out your passions but if you don't push the alternative button, you will continue to get what now have.
    • DELETE:  Delete-  We are busier people more than ever, and like a computer with multiple processess running in the background of our thoughts, it could freeze up and create a state of unmotivation.  You have the option to press your own "delete" key and delete the things that are negative in your life.  Analyze what makes you feel miserable or unmotivated and delete them.  Replace them with things that do motivate you and with positive thoughts.  Streamline your processess and cut out the B.S. that only freezes you up, and free yourself from having the unnecessary thoughts and activities in your life.

Remember, you have the "CONTROL" of your own attitude towards things.  You always have "Alternatives" and you can always cut the fat, wasted actions and thoughts by pressing your "delete" button.  If you press all 3 like you would your computer, you will be practicing personal innovation and finding creative ways to live a motivated and productive life by rebooting yourself and improving your current frozen self.
