Build Your Personal Brand by Writing

suite101

Building authority within your chosen area of focus or topic may help you establish and build your personal brand by connecting your expertise to your name.  A great way to build your authority is to provide useful content and information for people seeking the expertise you provide.  One way is to have your own blog with relevant information and another way to help drive traffic to your blog as well as provide useful information is by freelance writing for online article sites.

Spreading your expertise through a few select online article/content site will help you reach your target audience when they are browsing the web searching for information.  When your name starts to appear each time they do a search, you start to build upon your authority.  For example, lets say your expertise is in wine tasting.  You establish a blog about wine tasting and update it often and with valuable useful content.  As people search online with the keyword "wine tasting" your blog comes up.  They continue on their search and your name again pops up over and over again on various sites with the same topic.  This is a tactic used by many authors and successful people using personal branding to spread their name and expertise.  If nobody has heard of you, your authority is low, but if all paths lead to you, then your authority within your chosen specialty increases.

I have chosen to write about "Personal Innovation" and if you do a google search for personal innovation, I am sure you will find me on the first page.  You will also find me on other sites where I have chosen to put time into providing content.  This helps me develop my name, my chosen area of expertise as well as develop my personal brand.  Being a freelance writer has many benefits of helping you to achieve this goal as well as have the potential to help you earn some extra income in your spare time.

One of the sites I have chosen to write for is called Suite101 and here you can:

  • Choose your own topics
  • Set your own hours and work from home
  • Earn lifetime royalties
  • Put your work in front of millions of monthly readers
  • Build your online brand
  • Work with professional editors
  • Learn how to write for the web

The great part about being a freelance writer is that you can truly do it in your spare time or on the weekends.  I enjoy writing, so it helps feed my desire to write and whenever I submit an article, it will be working for me on an ongoing basis to help build my online personal brand and to build my authority.  So if you enjoy writing or want to learn, I think this is a great way to get your feet wet and build your personal brand by writing as a freelance writer.  I suggest giving it a try!  To learn more: Apply to write for Suite101, home to the web’s most useful articles. Innovate Your Listening Skills

people talking in parisWhen you are engaged in a conversation, do you ever find yourself ahead of yourself and not really listening completely, and in your mind formulating what you are going to say next?  I used the word engaged in the sentence above, but if you are not fully listening to the person in front of you, you are not truly engaged in the conversation.  I used to do this quite a bit and have missed out on deeper conversations, if only I had listened with full attention.

So how could you innovate your listening skills?

Well, this post is about how I changed the way my mind works during a conversation, or when someone is talking with me.

In a great conversation, it should be a two way interaction between two minds without the interferences of the person who is listening to formulate an answer or wander off mentally when being spoken to.  It is hard for me to really slow it down and give the person my full attention before, because I had the habit of wanting to give my input before really listening to the other person's perspective and taking it in.  Once, I changed the way I interact with others, I am now able to have much more meaningful discussions and it is funny when people tell me that I am such a great listener.

So what are the benefits of listening to others anyways?

Well for one, you might gain new knowledge or see things from a different angle.  Remember, you only know what you know and the way you think could be totally different than how others think.  Allowing others to give their perspective on things and sharing their knowledge on whatever it is that you are talking about, you might gain a new way of looking at things that you might have missed or learn something new.  Now you really don't lose anything by allowing the other person to have their say, you still have your opinions and thoughts about the topic at the time, but you get different perspectives.

Another benefit is that you will give yourself the opportunity to really connect with them and being the ear to take in what another wants to communicate.  Sometimes, I wait until the other person asks me for my opinion and by listening with full engagement, the other person asking for your perspective seems to listen to what you have to say much more than trying to force your opinions.  Before when I used to give an answer before the person even finished their thought process, the conversations did not go as deeply as when I changed my listening habits to allow the other person to talk.  I learned more, and also connected with the person on a much deeper level.  By listening, the other person is much more interested in hearing what you have to say.  So the effect is quite amazing versus trying to force your thoughts, you allow a productive dialogue where the other person feels that you truly listened and understand them, and when you give this to the other person, they will respect what you have to say much more because you have listened and understand what they were trying to communicate.

So How Can You Innovate the way you Listen?

  • Questions: When asking a question, allow the other person time to think it through and answer.  We all hate the silent moments in conversations and some people really think about the question you asked and might need a little time to think before speaking.  Allow this time and wait for the other to speak.  I used to have the bad habit of shooting off one question after another or even worse answer for them to where their response turns into yes or no answers, resulting in an unproductive and less meaningful conversation.
  • Think: When the person you are talking to says anything, put some thought into it before you give your answer or wait for them to ask about your opinion on what they had to say.
  • Ask: Ask more questions about what the other just said to get a better understanding.  This is an active listener skill, and advanced communication skill that seeks to understand the other completely.  This also shows the other that you want to understand them and have listened to them up to that point.
  • Listen: Make it a point to be fully engaged in what the other person has to say.  Don't look around them, think of an answer as they are speaking or think about what you want to say.  Be in the moment and give full attention to what the other person has to say.
  • Take Notes: If you ask someone for their opinion or advice on something, an active listener will take notes to remember what the other person has said.  Note taking shows active listening, but don't over do it and have the note taking take away from you listening.
  • Confirm:  Give confirming gestures and remarks as the other person speaks.  Ask them to elaborate more, dig deeper and let them know you are listening.  A great way to show this by nodding your head or say, "so what you are saying is this..." to ensure that you understand what the other is trying to communicate to you.

Erin and JeffChanging the way you communicate takes an active role on your part but you can implement it immediately with the next person you talk to.  Give some of these tactics a try, shut your mouth and open your ears... both of them and see how your interactions become much more meaningful and engaging.

How to get Very Good at Something

FlightAs we progress in life we pick up skills and develop talents that to some seem to come naturally.  When we watch our favorite band perform, they do it with ease.  An engaging public speaker makes you feel as if you could get up there and give the same speech with as much enthusiasm and power.  I am amazed when I watch both professional and non-professional snowboarders do tricks, and make it look so easy.  When, I go about trying to play a guitar, snowboard or give a public speech, at first it wasn't as easy as it looked.  Whatever it is that you want to get very good at, each person within their natural abilities can accomplish their goal of being very good at something.

The key word here is goal and I would also add focus.  When someone wants to get very good at something, a person must give it time to develop mastery and second nature reflexes that comes with time and effort.  When I speak with experts within their niche mastery, they ALL tell me that it took years of practice and execution to develop into the natural skills that is the end results of their years of hard work.  When we see the experts do their thing, we usually see the end result, but in the background and behind closed doors, these masters are practicing, refining and honing their skills.

Many people look for the easy route and want to impatiently become not only good, but great at something but do not put the effort necessary to achieve the level of expertise.  I stated focus earlier because, for you to be very good at something, you must give it focus.  I am sure some people could handle multiple activities and tasks, but to really become very good, give it room to develop and give it the necessary focus for you to learn and grow instead of piling on many things to learn all at once.  Give focus to a few things and develop mastery in those areas before taking on another challenge.

I am not saying that nobody could become very good at many different things, for example, Leonardo Da Vinci was very good at many different things.  You too can become very good at many different things, but do give it focus, time and effort for it to develop.

An analogy I can give is one of my favorite past times, snowboarding.  When I first stepped on a snowboard, I was somewhat comfortable because I used to skate and surf, but snowboarding was completely different.  As I jumped on the ski lift and the part where you have to jump off came right in front of me, I fell flat on my behind.  I kept falling, and was not able to get too far until I fell again.  When I finally got the hang of getting further than 10 feet, I didn't know what to do, so I did what I knew at that moment and I fell.  I caught myself saying to myself that I probably can't do this and probably should choose another recreational sport, because this one hurts!  I kept at it and I kept learning.  I kept getting up and learned how to stop, slow down, steer myself and keep myself from falling.  As the season went on, I was able to go down an entire run without falling and graduated to the blue trails.  I still fell here and there, but I kept getting up.  I was hooked from the natural high it gave me and the natural laser focus to the task at hand, because if I didn't, I could seriously injure myself.

Now as years passed and season after season has gone by, I consider myself a decent snowboarder.  I catch myself learning more of the details of the sport such as learning to control my breathing, looking ahead at where I want to go and play with the different settings to get better at turning.  Now I can do jumps and go in between trees as well as challenge myself to go fast and really enjoy each decent down the mountain.

Now I am not a professional snowboarder or have the goal to be one, but I consider myself very good at snowboarding to where I can teach others and some have even made money at doing so.  I gave this example because, just like in life and the skills we want to master.  It takes time and when we fall, we must get back up.  Things start to come naturally as our body and mind understands the movements needed to perform.  Before, I was thinking way too hard to just go 10 feet and now I can go down a mountain without really thinking, it seems natural.

YER BLUESLike anything else, playing a guitar, public speaking, dancing, writing or whatever it is you want to get very good at, it takes practice!  It takes learning from your past mistakes and correcting them.  Some people progress faster than some and at times we must take a look at our natural abilities to do something, like playing in the NFL.  Even if you want to accomplish this, you must have the natural abilities to deliver.

If you give up on your pursuit too soon, you might not ever reach the point of being very good at it and go on to something else and start the whole cycle again.  This example could be applied to anything you do, and it worked for my sales skills, public speaking, writing, learning, social interaction, communicating and of course snowboarding.

I have added many different skills and talents over the years, and I have discovered that the fastest way to become very good at something is coming to the realization that it takes time, effort, focus, talent, and dedication to come to the desired end result.  Don't always look for the end result, and enjoy the journey as you learn.  I look back and realize that the most fun was to discover and feel the joy of figuring things out to become better along the way.  When I reached a point of mastery, it is still fun but the journey there has been the best part.  Have fun developing yourself and "soon" you too will be very good at your chosen "something".

August Picks: Richest Man in Babylon & Secrets of Great Rainmakers

richestmaninbabylon

For this month, I have selected, "The Richest Man In Babylon" by George S. Clason as my book choice for August 2010.  I have a full lineup scheduled with school as well as work so I had to select a slim book that I could finish.

It is important to make time for yourself and to give your mind a break and enjoyment by giving it some quality recreational reading.  I love reading and it is fun when I don't "have" to read but choose to read.

Many people have suggested this book to me many times and I have purchased it in the past, but will finish this book by end of month August 2010 and give my review on September 1st, 2010.

My audio book selection for this month is the, "Secrets of Great Rainmakers", by Jeffrey J. Fox.  I listened and also read his previous book, How to become a rainmaker and loved the quick nuggets of information that gives me reminders on how to be successful and provides me with best practices when I go about my day to day activities and how I interact with people.  I will give my review on this audiobook on September 1st, 2010 as well.  To learn more about each of these products check out the links below:
