Self-Confidence Series: How to be more Confident

confidence

Coming from a person who grew up with low self confidence, I have grown into a person that learned how to be confident and will share with you what I learned along the way in a series of posts, self-confidence series.  I think this topic takes much more than one post to cover all the bases, so I hope you enjoy what I have to share with you as I reveal my phases of gaining self confidence in myself and my abilities and how you could apply this to your life to be more confident.

MY STORY

Growing up, I was the oldest of five kids and being the oldest usually comes with making lots of mistakes.  My family was a first generation Vietnamese family that came to the United States so I grew up with a very small family and didn't have the vast network of older family members to guide me.  I learned everything on my own and made lots of mistakes.  I am also a very independent person so I tend to listen to myself when it comes to direction, and sometimes this could lead to some bad decisions.  My mother and father were usually off working to support me and my brothers, so I was left alone many times to learn things on my own.  My mother had me at a young age and because I was her first, didn't have the experience in raising a son so I was the blueprint for the other siblings that came after me.

I grew up with such a bad self confidence problem and to top that off, I had a very bad stuttering problem that made it even worse.  I was also different in social situations because I was usually the only asian kid in my class, neighborhood, and this continued on as I went off to the Air Force and professional career.  Now one of the main factors that caused me to have self confidence was the fact that I made many mistakes as I was growing up, yet making these mistakes is the main reason for my self discovery and foundation of my self confidence that I have today.

When I made mistakes and wrong choices, I would hear comments from others usually telling me things such as, I will never do well in school, I would never be able to anything well and so on and so forth.  The problem that I have found was that I began listening to these people's comments and I would have the small talk in my mind before doing anything.  I honestly didn't think I would ever be able to complete college, be good at public speaking, socialize with people and the list goes on.  The interesting thing now is that, I graduated top of my class with Magna Cum Laude distinction, can give a public speech without any problems and can socialize with people in any situation.  My chosen profession is is sales where I have to approach people I don't know, build a relationship and sell them products.  You would never guess a person with low self confidence would ever be able to do this as their career, but I have done it successfully year over year.

So how did a stuttering asian kid, with a severe self confidence problem, break out of his shell and overcame the "small negative talk" within my own mind to come out the other side the total opposite of what many have thought I would turn out as well as myself?  Well, it did take years of proving to myself that I am capable and to not listen to the negativity that others give, and learn from my own experiences and proved to myself that I am capable of anything.

NEGATIVE THOUGHTS & ENERGY

We all have a degree of negative thoughts that crosses our mind when we set out to do something, what I have learned is that I have to control this negativity that held me back from going for what I want.  I also learned that I don't have to believe what others say about me, and choose to listen to myself as well as the positive feedback I get from others versus only listening to the negative comments.  I have developed myself now to where negative thoughts do cross my mind, but my positive thoughts overpower them.  What I do in situations where I catch myself over-thinking a situation and only focusing on the possible negative reactions of outcomes, I realize that I am ignoring looking at the opportunities to shine and do well.  For example, lets say I have a speech I have to give in front of 100 people, and public speaking is a very scary activity and I believe it is one of the most feared things any human could possibly do.  My old low self confidence side will start making a movie in my mind of all the possible mistakes I could make, I start to doubt myself and think "what if my stuttering comes back", or I say the wrong things, forget my speech and so on and so forth.  Versus, thinking about how much I have prepared for this speech and that I have something important to say and no matter what happens, I will give it my best!  If I only focus on what might go wrong, my positive energy is drained and filled with negativity.  Confidence comes from controlling what your thoughts in your mind and to change the channel from negativity to positive thoughts.  This doesn't mean that I am mistake free anymore, but I don't let mistakes stop me from giving it my all because the way I look at mistakes are lessons to make myself a stronger person.

BE BRAVE

Even though I had negative thoughts in my mind, I had the determination to go forth head on to tackle my challenges.  I would meet my fears head on and in doing so, I learned over time that I am capable of doing anything.  Now my first time doing something, I must admit I sucked, but as time progressed and I learned, improved and took the mistakes along the way to correct, I was able to build confidence in areas that I had problems with.  A great example I have was my first attempt at public speaking.  This is quite embarrassing, I was in front of my peers and over 300 people and as I was standing in front of everyone, I probably experienced the worse experience any person who fears public speaking could possibly do.  I FROZE... my neck tensed, I could hear myself breathing, my palms got sweaty and I simply FROZE....the only words that came out of my mouth was... "I cannot do this" as I walked off the stage and walked my walk of shame.  Did I give up?  Heck no, I mean I just witnessed the worst I could possibly experience, yet I am o.k.  I took that experience and learned from it and started learning how to give public speeches, read about how to be a great speaker, talked to others that I have witnessed give a good speech and ask them what they do.  Most of the greatest speakers I have heard all tell me that they also had a huge fear of speaking and made numerous mistakes along the way.  I learned that I had to practice, practice and practice.  I also volunteered to give talks whenever I could.  I learned to accept my breathing and hearing my own voice, it didn't bother me anymore and as time progressed, I receive comments from people telling me that they wished that they were as confident as me when they give a speech, and in my mind I simply say, "if only they knew", but I give them words of encouragement because I thought the same thing before.  It takes the guts to be brave enough to make mistakes and to learn.  Be brave enough to not listen to the negative thoughts and to focus on what you are doing and the positive side of things.  If you are not brave, you will be in the same situation you have always been in.  Life is exciting when you are able to push yourself to learn and progress.  Do I still get nervous before giving a speech, somewhat but I am filled more with positive thoughts and being through about over 100 public speeches after that first horrible, one, I can say I can give a speech in front of any sized crowd.

POSITIVE THINKING

The psychology of self confidence has to do with positive thinking and to strengthen the positive thoughts you have, you must be brave enough to give yourself successful experiences to pull from.  Yes, you will make mistakes along the way, but be positive about making them and learn.  If you focus on the negativity, then that is what you usually get.  Condition yourself to be used to awkward situations and prove to yourself that you can do anything better each time.  As time passes you will progress into a person with much higher confidence that cannot be shaken because you have the solid positive learning experiences that shaped your confidence and your foundation.  Don't let fear hold you back for what you want, listen to your spirit and heart and go forth.  You WILL MAKE MISTAKES, accept that and choose to learn from them versus beating yourself up.  Also, if people only give you negative comments that is not constructive, avoid these toxic energy sucking vampires and listen to the people who support you and give you comments that helps make you better.  It is easy for anyone say, "you suck" but it takes you to decide if you want to believe them.  Be brave, learn and grow.

NEXT PART OF THE CONFIDENCE SERIES:  LEARN HOW TO TALK TO ANYONE.

How Trying to be Perfect is Not Perfect

Pefect AlignmentHave you ever pursued a project or dream and never seem to complete what you started because you feel as if it is not "perfect"?  Nothing is wrong with pursuing excellence in all you do but when you let self doubt and overly critical reviews on yourself stand in the way of ever letting anyone see what you produced, then you are not allowing your ideas and creations to realize success.

I have talked to many people who have shared their personal projects with me and I am amazed at the work they have produced.  The types of projects I am talking about is their passion and because they have a deep passion for it, they are overly critical when it comes to criticizing their own work.  Some of the work I have seen from others include, poems, artwork, books, software, an idea, business startup etc.  and what I have noticed is that many usually feel as if it is not good enough to share with the masses or good enough to offer as a product.  This is where I think the pursuit of being perfect is actually not perfect because it is limiting the potential success one might realize if others get to see it and consume it.  Great ideas come from everyday people and innovation starts with each individuals imagination and solution to problems.  That made me wonder about how many unique and cool products there were out there that are not for sale on the mass market because of individuals self limiting beliefs.  I have browsed craft fairs in the past and have found the most beautiful crafted products and actually prefer to buy these handmade items for gifts because they are perfect in my eyes, unique, original and much more creative than products offered in masses.

Limiting yourself by trying to be perfect could actually hinder you from actually reaching perfection.  Many fear the criticism given by others and try to perfect what they are doing before they feel it is good enough.  Yet, good enough never occurs and it is shelved away, never to be seen by anyone or by only a few people.  We cannot satisfy everyone and you can actually use the criticisms by people as ways to improve what you are doing, if they are truly giving you constructive criticism in the first place.  If someone says that idea is horrible, you may ask, "how can I improve upon this, based on your assessment" or ask about other possible ways to make your creation better and find areas to work on from different sets of eyes versus only what you see and know.  Like I said earlier, you cannot and will not satisfy everyone, so pay attention to the ones who like what you have produced and cater to them.  If you look at our market today and in the past, there have been amazing products offered to us that we love, yet others do not care for.  A great example is the choice of using a PC or a MAC.  Lets imagine if the founders of Apple never shown anyone what they have created or offered their products for sale, we would never have the iphone, ipad, ipod and other creative products that came from this company.  Apple has evolved over time, and with any company or product, it evolves into better products over time.

If you have an idea, product or dream you have created or invented, give it room to breathe and consider sharing it with the world, you might not satisfy everyone, but something great might come about you allowing it grow.  Things will never be perfect but you could always work towards that goal, but don't let the pursuit of trying to be perfect actually stop you from being perfect.

Have you Visited your Library Lately?

Sakura last days here...When was the last time you visited your local library? I used to visit the library and learn everything I wanted to know, but haven't been inside of one for the past 10 years.  I guess it is much easier to google for information or visit the local bookstore and have never thought about the resources that I pay for by way of taxes.  Today I rediscovered the joy of the local public library and was amazed at how much things have changed.

Things have changed to where I had to keep asking everyone for help, all the way to how to check out the books.  My local public library is very clean with many of the new books you see recently published.  The media selection was amazing and the technology to search and check out made things simple and met my need for finding information.  I am again a fan of the public library.

I think I got lazy due to the access to information provided by the internet and blogs, but what I have realized is that I only get only a brief on information and most blogs only provide a quick post on a given subject.  If you are in need to researching a topic, try visiting your library and checking out books and dvds on your subject versus just trying to find it on the web.  I also have the habit of visiting my local big box bookstore and pick up a book and have forgotten about checking books out for free at the public library.  I was like a kid in a candy store, because I love to read and when I go into a bookstore, I have to limit my purchases.  Now, I can satisfy my thirst for knowledge and research and check out up to 30 items at a time.  This is a great way to live frugally and save money since I won't have to buy the book out of my own pocket.

I also get much better research information versus trying to find it on the web, since most web sites try to sell you something and most information is just a crafty sales letter, rather than a book that is loaded with information.  I suggest you visit your local public library, you pay for it, might as well use it.  You might be amazed at the changes and it could save you some money and serve as a resource for your research needs or just a source to provide you with your recreational reading.  Now all that is missing is a coffee shop and it is perfect!

I work on the road, and usually go to a coffee shop to do work during lunch and connect with the 1 hour "free" wifi provided if you order the $5.00 cup of coffee.  Now, I will search for the nearest public library since most provide FREE WIFI, without the minimum purchase of a coffee and provide me with a quiet environment with nice chairs and tables to be productive.  Rediscover the public library and be prepared to be amazed!

Should I Buy an iPad?

ipad

Have you asked yourself that question lately?  I sure have and I have been hearing many people ask the same exact question.  I think that the question we should really be asking ourselves is if we really need an iPad at this time.

Now don't get me wrong, the iPad is a really cool gadget and it comes close to being an impulse item or badge of proof of being a gadget geek but when you look at the need for your current situation, I think being  mindful of your budget and necessity of having one should cross your mind.

Living frugally and within our means will help us stay out of debt and being debt free is a much better feeling than ever having any new gadget or product.  When my fiance asked if we should get one, I knew that she will have the high interest and at one point wanted to go head out to pick one up immediately.  I think this is why the iPad has sold so well.  She then put some thought into it and looked at our current situation and asked herself, do we really need an iPad?  So this was what we came up with.  (sorry Apple)

  • We have enough computers in the house that would have made us an information hub back in 1997.  I have a desktop with enough RAM to keep me happy for years on end with a dual screen.  I also have two laptops and my fiance has a mini/notebook laptop.  We each have an iPhone as well.  So do we really need another gadget that allows us to flip the pages versus using a mouse?
  • It is just a big iPhone:  She came to the conclusion that it was just a big iphone and since we really dig the touch screen effect, I think we are satisfied with what our iPhone is providing for us for now.  When I start reading more by computer, I think having a touch screen computer will come in handy.
  • We could save the money we would have spent on the iPad for spending during our vacation.  Memories and vacation is very important to us, and having extra money to spend when on vacation without having to go into debt is a vacation well spent.
  • We decided to purchase an iPad later when we have used up our laptops and when the next generation comes out with more features and lower pricing.

I am sure there are many happy tech geeks with this new gadget and will call me a late adopter but I am happy to say that I am staying within budget and not getting deeper into debt and spending wisely by using the items I have now to their full life.  When a technology comes along that meets my current needs or when the technology I have has been outdated, then I will decide upon updating.  By that time, it might not even be an iPad.  If you are currently in debt, I do hope you look at your current needs before jumping out to buy the latest and greatest gadget, things like these make the other products that were hot just last month go down in price dramatically.  So be smart and spend wisely.

Build Your Personal Brand by Writing

suite101

Building authority within your chosen area of focus or topic may help you establish and build your personal brand by connecting your expertise to your name.  A great way to build your authority is to provide useful content and information for people seeking the expertise you provide.  One way is to have your own blog with relevant information and another way to help drive traffic to your blog as well as provide useful information is by freelance writing for online article sites.

Spreading your expertise through a few select online article/content site will help you reach your target audience when they are browsing the web searching for information.  When your name starts to appear each time they do a search, you start to build upon your authority.  For example, lets say your expertise is in wine tasting.  You establish a blog about wine tasting and update it often and with valuable useful content.  As people search online with the keyword "wine tasting" your blog comes up.  They continue on their search and your name again pops up over and over again on various sites with the same topic.  This is a tactic used by many authors and successful people using personal branding to spread their name and expertise.  If nobody has heard of you, your authority is low, but if all paths lead to you, then your authority within your chosen specialty increases.

I have chosen to write about "Personal Innovation" and if you do a google search for personal innovation, I am sure you will find me on the first page.  You will also find me on other sites where I have chosen to put time into providing content.  This helps me develop my name, my chosen area of expertise as well as develop my personal brand.  Being a freelance writer has many benefits of helping you to achieve this goal as well as have the potential to help you earn some extra income in your spare time.

Promote Your Personal Brand with Mini Business Cards

mini business cards

Do you effectively promote your personal brand offline?  The best way to promote your personal brand is by in person interactions.  Promoting your personal brand online is only one channel, but when you interact with someone in person, you establish a relationship.  If you have an online profile, website, blog or social network, give the people you meet with a unique reminder to follow up with you.

I recommend using a mini business card to leave with your new contacts and people you meet during your day to day interactions.

WHAT IS A MINI BUSINESS CARD

A mini business card is half the size of a regular business card, I like it because it is NOT a business card and is unique.  It stands out and serves as a tool to give to people you meet to continue contact with you or to visit your website.  You can promote your personal brand by giving an extension to your discussions with people or give a means for them to connect with you online.

BENEFITS OF USING A MINI CARD

  • Conversation Starter:  Using images or quotes on your personal mini card is a great conversation starter.  If you want to be know for your creative skills, place some images of what you created on your mini card to display what you can create and promote your personal brand.
  • Show your Work:  You could mix samples of your work and have it printed on these mini card to promote what you are capable of.  A great example is a web designer or instructor.  You could display sample images of designs you created or place a simple trivia and answer according to your expertise.
  • Promote your blog:  You have a blog or website, a mini card is a perfect way to give as a promotional reminder to people you meet.  It stands out against a business card and serves as a great reminder for people you meet to type in the URL to visit your site for more information on you.
  • Link to your resume:  If you have an online resume, use a mini business card to provide a link to your online resume.
  • Quotes:  Print different quotes you live by along with your contact information.  Sometimes your business card has nothing to do with the many people you meet.  Instead of giving a business card with your company logo, give your personal brand card that has you as the focus.  Quotes are very popular and displays your beliefs and words you live by.
  • Unique:  A mini card is unique and makes you stand out and memorable.
