What is Personal Innovation?

personal innovation

Personal Innovation picks up where personal development left off.  Personal innovation is about rethinking the ways you do things on a daily basis and to improve with each passing day.  Maybe you have applied some personal development into your life, but as the times changes, what got you successful before might not work for the future.  We live in different times and by making a commitment to personal innovation to recreate yourself and make yourself a better person than you were yesterday, a month ago, or a year ago, you will continue to achieve more success and take personal development to the next level.  These are the basic principles behind personal innovation. First, lets define innovation:

Wikipedia.org defines innovation as,

Innovation is a change in the thought process for doing something or "new stuff that is made useful.

Bing.com defines innovation as,

  • origination: the act or process of inventing or introducing something new
  • new idea or method: a new invention or way of doing something
  • Google.com defines innovation as,

An innovation is a new thing or a new method of doing something.

An innovation is a new thing or a new method of doing something. Noun (countable) Innovation is the introduction of new ideas, methods, or things. Noun (uncountable)

Some of the Synonyms: novelty, invention, revolution, origination, modernization, improvement, advance.

As you can see the word innovation itself is about doing something new, its about fresh ideas, improvement and advancement.  Personal development is a beneficial approach for many to apply to their lives to improve, but look for innovative ways to re-energize your development by looking at innovative ways to improve upon what you already have set in place and innovate your personal development.

Personal Innovation is about innovating yourself and making yourself better at whatever it is you do.  If you have customers, and they are currently happy, take it to the next level and just wow them with more, if you think you have reached a comfortable level of success, push yourself to grow even further.  Just like technology and products, without innovation you may risk being left behind as others realize the importance of innovation and does something about it.  Look at things with a fresh set of eyes and be aware of the changes in your industry, profession and trends and innovate to prepare yourself for the next level of development on a personal level.

Innovative Approach to Reboot Yourself: Press Cntrl-Alt-Delete

    controlaltdelete

Like our computers we have many things going on in our lives that can overwhelm us and cause us to crash or freeze things up to where we are in a rut or feel unmotivated.  Like our computers, there are certain buttons you can push to get you out of that situation and by pushing the right buttons you can move towards innovating yourself and changing your unmotivated state.  You must be wondering why I have the control-alt-delete keys as an example for this post.  Well, just like a computer, we can get stuck and overloaded with processes that tend to freeze us up.  Sometimes no matter how long we wait for something to happen, things just seem to go too slow.  In life, you also have the option for Control - Alt and Delete for a better outcome.  Take a look at what I mean below:

    • CTRL:  CONTROL-  In life, things come our way that we cannot control, but the one thing we can control is our attitude.  We can choose to learn from our setbacks and not let it overcome us and take it as lessons learned or as they say, "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger".  If you are feeling unmotivated, control the situation by adjusting your attitude towards why you feel unmotivated.  Look for innovative ways to recreate yourself or what you are doing.  When we operate like a robot on cruise control, things can get quite boring, but we have the power to push our own "control" button on how we break out of our comfort zone and open ourselves to different challenges and actions that will give us the sense of motivation back in our lives.  You have full control of what you do on a daily basis, you can choose to do just what is necessary, or you can look for new opportunities, volunteer for different projects, mentor someone, improve upon what you are currently doing... you have the control, just push that button.
    • ALT: Alternative-  Ok, the ALT key is actually alternate, but in this case lets just say it stands for alternatives.  If you are unmotivated, look for alternatives to get you re-energized and motivated.  If you continue doing what you are doing, and yet it makes you unmotivated, you will stay that way.  You will feel stuck because you didn't look for the different routes to take instead you continue doing what makes you feel unmotivated.  Adjust your attitude, with positve thoughts as an alternative or be bold and seek out your passions but if you don't push the alternative button, you will continue to get what now have.
    • DELETE:  Delete-  We are busier people more than ever, and like a computer with multiple processess running in the background of our thoughts, it could freeze up and create a state of unmotivation.  You have the option to press your own "delete" key and delete the things that are negative in your life.  Analyze what makes you feel miserable or unmotivated and delete them.  Replace them with things that do motivate you and with positive thoughts.  Streamline your processess and cut out the B.S. that only freezes you up, and free yourself from having the unnecessary thoughts and activities in your life.

Remember, you have the "CONTROL" of your own attitude towards things.  You always have "Alternatives" and you can always cut the fat, wasted actions and thoughts by pressing your "delete" button.  If you press all 3 like you would your computer, you will be practicing personal innovation and finding creative ways to live a motivated and productive life by rebooting yourself and improving your current frozen self.

5 Books You Should Read For Power, Leadership & Influence

    wisdom copy

Most of the things I have learned in life have been through trial and error.  Through books, I am able to learn the trial and errors and the winning formulas of those who have experienced success in their life and gain experiences through books.  The following five books are my recommendations for anyone wanting more power and influence.  Excel in life by continually learning, and innovating yourself:

1:  The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene--  This book is a book that I reference back to time and time again.  The book is like the bible of power and Robert Greene explores the historical figures and situations for you to understand the inner workings of power.  One of my favorites!

2: The 50th Law by 50 Cent and Robert Greene-- Another great book by Robert Greene and this one is based upon him following and observing 50 Cent.  I came to admire 50 Cent after reading this book and the lessons taught to you in this is worth its weight in gold.  The book is brutally honest and it make you think and it has changed my life, forever.  I highly recommend this book.

3: THE ART OF WAR by Sun Tzu--  A great book on strategy and a military classic that has been read by the most powerful people since it has been published.  The lessons are powerful and you learn to think strategically and when implemented, you will see the effects it has on your life and the control you will have by thinking strategically.  It is a military strategy book, but you can apply the lessons to almost any situation, just be innovative and creative on how the lessons can be applied to different situations.

4: The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli--  Another classic that demonstrates the power of influence in politics and business.  An intelligent strategic approach to influencing others and controlling situations.  I have read this book more than 3 times and have learned different things, during different parts of my life.  A great handbook to have and apply.

5: How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie--  I remember picking up this book and devouring it while I was in the 8th grade.  During that time, I really wanted to be more popular and have more influence with my circles of friends.  This book really opened my eyes and taught me lessons that I use till this day.  A great book to keep and reference every few years or so.

Bonus: The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow-- Power and influence has a lot to do with leadership skills, and a book that I have been still reading for the past year is from John C. Maxwell.  I picked up an out of copy collection that included 3 books in one, but the lessons taught in these pages will help you gain more power by developing your leadership skills and learning what it takes to have people WANT to follow you.

These books sit on my office desk and I reference them quite often.  If you are looking for a few books to develop your influence and build upon your leadership skills, then these 6 books are for you.  Even though it has a lot to do with strategy, warfare and possibly negative connotations are associated to them.... especially the word, power, but it really depends on how you use that power.

    Why Personal Innovation is Important

    innovation

You might have heard this mantra before, "Innovate or Die", and usually it applies to an organization or business.  Lets take this to a personal level and explore why personal innovation is important.

Let me ask you, how do you innovate yourself?  Are you a robot that goes through life by just delivering the bare minimum or expected levels of performance?  I have seen many people I have encountered on a daily basis who just do enough (or just don't care) to get by and not really make any effort to tap into their creativity and personal skills to deliver something more.  It truly is not that hard to just add a little bit more to what you or others normally do to really stand out.  Think about your job and the thousands of others doing the same thing you are doing, how do you stand out from the pack?  A competitive advantage is to innovate not only your company, but innovate yourself.  For example, if you are a salesperson and you go on your day to day work doing the minimal that every other salesperson is delivering to their customers, you will just be another sales rep.  Lets say you go the extra mile and add creativity and innovation to even the smallest of activities, I am sure it will be noticed .

Some people overdo it and approach it wrong by not putting their true passion or intention behind their personal innovation.  Seeking balance in everything you do will result in a higher chance of success.

Personal innovation is important because you set yourself apart from the majority of people.  You exercise your creative skills, and I truly feel that in each of us, we all have creativity.   We get lazy or don't look for ways to innovate our-self or things we do on a daily basis.  For example, do you just send an email to your friend when it is his/her birthday?  How about sending a handmade card or even a handwritten letter.  How about when you are given a task to do at work, do you just do enough or do what everyone else is doing, or do you look for ways to add innovative approaches and creativity into it?

By innovating yourself, you keep things fresh and exciting.  You are also much more aware of your life and make your everday activities much more meaningful and fun.  Many people complain that their life is boring, their job sucks.. and so on...  Take charge of this and find innovative ways to improve yourself.  I truly respect a person who I encounter such as my grocery cashier who goes out of her way to say hi, put on a smile and strike up a small conversation with each of her customers.  She really stands out, and I remember each encounter til this day.  I bet most of you don't even remember who your grocery cashier person is, but whatever you do, try doing a bit more and you will see how things become more fun and interesting... also it makes you a bit more interesting as well.

Lets talk about you professionally.  How have  you innovated yourself in the past 10 years, 5 years, 2 years, month?  I have met many people who are just comfortable with their current position and never take the time to innovate themselves EVER!  During our current economic condition, people are losing jobs and jobs are much harder to find.  These people then realize how much competition is out there  when they go looking for a job and when asked about their skills, it is either outdated or they are just another job-seeker out of thousands with the same credentials or skills.  I am not saying that it is bad to be content with what you do or who you are.  It is just important to add a new skill or learn something new so that you can offer more or put more on the table.  You can take night classes, learn a new skill, new language, challenge yourself or you can even learn a new craft or art.  I am currently innovating myself and investing in myself by pursuing my MBA degree.  It is a personal goal for me to accomplish this and even though the commitment is time consuming, but I am learning a lot and once I get the degree, nobody can take that away from me.  I also met new friends with similar interests and I grow with each encounter with them.

Remember to strive for balance and not to overdo things.  If you commit to something, try delivering your best.  Innovate yourself one step at a time and as time passes, you will find that you will have much more to offer than the next person and your life will be much more meaningful and less mundane and boring.
