I was having lunch with some clients of mines at a Chinese restaurant and at the end of the meal we were given fortune cookies. I watched as each person opened up their cookie to reveal their fortune. As they read their message, they get all excited about the random message given to them. One such message stated that they will be traveling to distant lands soon. I had then asked, so where do you think you might go? The reply I got was that they have not traveled for years. Hmmm… that is quite interesting. Another message given to another was, a long lost friend will reconnect with you. I then asked, “have you ever reconnected with a long lost friend before?”. The answer, no.I know that these fortune cookies are just meant for fun but I feel that the way we look at things and respond to them will either add value to our lives or will just be random nonsense. So, my proposal to you is that the next time you open your fortune cookie, why not have a conversation with your dining buddies and have a discussion about their “fortune”. The questions that should be asked, is how can you make traveling to distant lands possible, where would you go. I would also recommend taking the action upon yourself to make those good fortunes happen to you. The example with reconnecting with a long lost friend could be you who takes the initiative and reach out to a long lost friend.
The messages vary, and a lot has to do with gaining financial wins. These questions you should ask yourself should be how you could obtain them. Take these moments as a time to make things happen or put some thought into the random messages that comes your way. Don’t let chance dictate your life, but take control of how you obtain them. A prime example are the lucky numbers given to you on these fortune cookies as well. Why let a cookie dictate your lucky numbers, make them yourself.
So the next time you encounter a fortune cookie… respond to them differently by being the one in control and to make things happen versus just getting excited about a random message that most don’t ever pursue, even though they are excited about the idea. Just a thought….
